A north- or east-facing porch doesn't have to go without color. We build our Mixed Shade Baskets by hand from shade-loving annuals — think fuchsias, begonias, lobelia, and trailing accents — combined for fullness, color, and spill, and grown until they're blooming and ready to hang. They're the answer for the covered entry or tree-shaded deck where petunias just sulk. The main job is water, since a full basket dries quickly even in shade, so plan to check it daily in midsummer and feed regularly. Combinations change with the season and what's looking its best.
