  • Sunlight: full sun
  • Water: low
  • Season: Blooms late summer into fall; hardy perennial
  • Price: $8–$16

Autumn Joy is a hardy sedum that bridges the gap between succulent and perennial, and it's one of the most reliable plants you can grow here. The fleshy, water-storing foliage looks tidy all summer, then in late summer it sends up broad flower heads that open soft pink and deepen to rusty red, drawing bees and butterflies when little else is blooming. Leave the dried heads standing and they hold their shape through winter, catching the snow. It's drought-tough, Zone 3 hardy, and happiest in full sun with lean, well-drained soil — overwatering and rich soil just make it flop.
