Honeyberries (also called haskaps) might be the most Montana-friendly berry there is. They're hardy well below anything our winters throw at them, they bloom and ripen earlier than almost any other fruit — often before the strawberries — and unlike blueberries they don't need acidic soil to thrive. The elongated blue berries taste like a cross between a blueberry and a raspberry, great fresh or in jam. Plant two different varieties for good pollination, give them full sun and even moisture, and they'll fruit for decades with very little fuss. We'll help you pick a compatible pair.
