Annabelle is the hydrangea that actually performs in our climate. Unlike the fussier bigleaf types, it's a smooth hydrangea that's hardy to Zone 3 and blooms on new wood — meaning it flowers reliably every summer even after a hard Montana winter. The result is huge, rounded white flower heads on a four-foot shrub, from midsummer into fall. It likes part shade (especially afternoon relief), steady moisture, and a hard cut-back in late winter to keep it tidy and full.
