Autumn Blaze is one of the most popular shade trees for good reason: it grows quickly into a strong, oval-rounded canopy and lights up every fall with dependable red-orange color. It's hardy well into our range (Zone 3/4), tolerates a variety of soils, and is largely free of the seed mess of some maples. Give it full sun and room to reach its mature size, water it well while it establishes, and it will pay you back with decades of shade. Fall planting, while the soil is still warm, helps it settle in.
