Honeycrisp earned its fame honestly: an explosively crisp, juicy, sweet-tart apple that happens to have been bred in a northern climate, which makes it a natural for the Flathead. It's cold-hardy, dependable, and the fruit stores beautifully into winter. Like most apples it needs a second, compatible variety nearby for pollination, so plan to plant a partner or check that a neighbor has one. Give it full sun, room to grow, even water while it establishes, and a yearly winter prune for shape and airflow. Patience pays — a young tree takes a few seasons to hit full stride.
