Gartenmeister Bonstedt breaks the fuchsia mold: instead of dangling skirts it carries clusters of long, tubular orange-red flowers above handsome bronze-green leaves, and it grows upright rather than trailing. That shape makes it a great thriller in the center of a mixed pot or a standout in a bed. Hummingbirds line up for the tubular blooms. It takes a little more sun than most fuchsias but still appreciates afternoon shade and even moisture in the valley's summer heat.
